Have you received a gift card as a present that you can’t use? Maybe there’s a specific gift card you want to buy but can’t find. You can turn to websites that allow you to buy, sell, and swap gift cards. Just make sure to do your due diligence because not all gift card websites operate above board. Some even start off as reliable but then go downhill.
Before taking the plunge, run a web search for any website you’re considering. Look for customer reviews and its Better Business Bureau ratings. Pay attention to any responses from the vendor. Did they try to resolve an issue? Were they dismissive of a disgruntled customer? You’ll want to stick with those that have garnered more positive feedback from users.
Once you do pick a website, read the FAQ section. Since the cards are pre-owned, you run the risk of paying for a card that doesn’t contain the promised balance. Most sites offer a money-back guarantee if you run into this problem, but that promise may have an expiration date. For that reason, try to use any purchased gift card as soon as possible to ensure that the money you paid is refunded in the event of an improper balance.
You may want to test the waters on a specific site by starting out with a small gift card purchase—maybe $10 or $20—to see if the process runs without any hitches. If all goes smoothly, then you can try for a larger purchase or attempt to sell one of your own gift cards. Here’s how to get started.
