If you’re planning to resell your Christmas gifts, you’re obviously not alone. In a press release, the Rakuten marketplace announces that 680,000 ads were posted this December 25 at 3 p.m. A historic record in France, which confirms the company’s predictions: this year, 4 out of 10 French people are already planning to resell the presents they do not wish to keep, either because they do not like them, or because they they have no use for it, or they have it in duplicate. Among the most popular product categories on the second-hand site, we find:
- Cultural products (books, video games, music, DVDs): 79%
- High-tech products (TVs, smartphones, computers): 12%
- Home products (household appliances, board games): 7%

Despite the obstacles that still exist (scruples are expressed for 29% of French people), the upward trend in resales is an encouraging sign. “The French are resolving the cognitive dissonance that existed between the sacredness of Christmas and reselling gifts. For a large number of them, there is no longer any opposition in principle between celebrating Christmas with family, giving all its importance to this precious moment, and adopting very pragmatic behaviors such as that the purchase of second-hand gifts or the resale of gifts“, estimates Erwan Devèze, neuroscientist and lecturer.
Add to this the drop in purchasing power, and the simplicity of resale on dedicated platforms, and the figures speak for themselves: this year, 50% of French people planned to offer reconditioned or second-hand gifts, And more than half have already resold a gift which did not please. This is 10% more than in 2020.
