Mired in controversy, Pirate Software has now issued a ‘final’, definitive statement on the OnlyFangs drama within the World of Warcraft community. The divisive streamer is now hoping to ‘wash his hands’ of the situation.
The start of 2025 was a saga for the history books in the WoW scene, but not for the right reasons. There is a lot of controversy on social media, with Pirate Software caught in the middle.
For those unaware, the game developer turned streamer came under fire for his actions in the OnlyFangs guild. In recent weeks, members of the guild have been grinding on hardcore servers, where death is final and characters are permanently erased.
Pirate Software’s actions came into question during a Dire Maul run, where a group of five players became overwhelmed and decided to turn back. Amid the chaos, two members met their demise, with many blaming Pirate. As a mage, his character could have helped slow down angry crowds of enemies with crowd control (CC) effects, but instead he cast Ice Barrier on himself and assured that he could have done nothing to help his guildmates.
What followed was a huge wave of backlash, prompting OnlyFang’s leader and fellow streamer Sodapoppin to kick Pirate out of the guild. It has been an ongoing dispute ever since and now the controversial figure has spoken out, in what he believes will be the last time, and issued a definitive statement on the controversy.
Pirate Software fires back at OnlyFang’s drama in ‘final’ statement
“This OnlyFangs thing basically sucks,” Pirate began in a lengthy speech on January 15 on X (formerly Twitter). “Put everything in one place and then wash my hands of it.”
First, the streamer attempted to clarify his actions in the Dire Maul run once and for all. Despite many explanations in the consequences, he doubled down on his argument here: “From my perspective, I didn’t feel like I could save anyone else with the resources I had.
“Since the call to flee, I followed the call and got out as quickly as possible,” he explained. Pirate then claimed that “the whole thing” was pinned on him “despite everyone making mistakes” in the five-man crew.
With the controversy being the biggest focus in the streaming community to start the new year, some pesky viewers have gone a little too far in their criticism, a point even Sodapoppin agrees with. It is the litany of death threats that Pirate next wanted to tackle.
“The next few days there were just tens of thousands of messages calling me names, sending death threats, doxxing and all kinds of nonsense.
Previews on X revealed death threats received via private messages directly in WoW. Some players threatened to stab him while “people waited” at his local grocery store, while others brought his parents into the equation and threatened to harm his family as well.
Bashing the “hate attack,” Pirate explained why he issued mass bans, spending several days purely reporting “attack accounts.”
“The idea that you shouldn’t fight back or do anything to defend yourself is absurd,” he stressed. “Definitely do something about this kind of thing. Defend yourself and report this type of behavior.”
Pirate Software leaves the door open for an OnlyFang reunion of sorts
Concluding his statement, although not directly mentioned, Pirate thanked a number of OnlyFangs guild members who “reached out” during the fallout to show their support.
“It was fun running together and maybe someday we’ll play in another game,” he concluded, suggesting he’s open to playing with the guild members just in a space far removed from WoW.
Despite this lengthy statement, many in the community remain dissatisfied with Pirate’s take on the situation. For many, it’s a matter of taking responsibility, as dozens of X’s members argued that he should just apologize and move on.
“Try saying sorry challenge (impossible), a common response. “This is toddler behavior,” said another. “All you had to do was apologize (for killing two level 60 characters. Grow up.”
“Bro doesn’t deserve death threats but his attitude is extremely shitty all the time,” said one viewer. “A man who talks big and condescending to others constantly demonstrates minimal skill in a game, refuses to take responsibility and constantly shifts blame.”
For now, Pirate has claimed that he is washing his hands of the drama and will not comment further on it. Meanwhile, the OnlyFangs guild continues to make strides in Hardcore Wow, with artists like Tyler1 and Sodapoppin still grinding daily.
