Three years since fans of Severance feverishly waiting to know what happened to our team infiltrated in the outside world, to know the consequences of their actions on them, on their original versions, and on Lumon. Yes, one of the best (if not the) Apple TV+ series is indeed back for a season 2 and we’re going to give you three good reasons to throw yourself into it head on.
However, before that, a little reminder of the facts for those who were there three years ago and who really need to revive their memories. Warning, spoilers for the season 1 finale.
In the last episode, Mark, Helly and Irving working at Lumon managed to gain awareness in the lives of their externals with the aim of transmitting information about what is really happening in the company. Meanwhile, Dylan kept his comrades connected as best he could, hidden in the control office. Irving discovered that his significant other was always painting the same picture for him and investigated the company. He then rushed to Burt’s house to warn him. Helly understood that she was Eagan’s heir and that she was making an immersive documentary in order to promote dissociation. In front of all of Lumon’s supporters, she was going to reveal the truth. As for Mark, he managed to pass on the information to his sister, while revealing who Mrs. Selvig, aka Mrs. Cobel, really was. At the last second, we saw Milchick manage to stop Dylan and the connection.
A direction we didn’t see coming
To tell you the truth, we expected that this first episode of season 2 of Severance leaves with the same energy as the conclusion described above. However, this is not the case. On the contrary, the scenario shakes up our certainties by returning directly to Lumon, without any contact with the outside world. An episode behind closed doors which plays the mirror card with the beginnings of the first season: a disoriented character who must quickly find his new bearings. Except that this character is Mark.
This return is enough to make us (baby) goat by taking the form of a happy ending with the things that have changed within the company thanks to this coup. A magnificent trompe-l’oeil which has only one objective: to divide the team by recreating a (false) feeling of security. Bulk, Severance plays the card of normality and, thus, creates as much confusion in the minds of its rebels as in ours. We see the maneuver, we doubt the goodwill, but as it stands, nothing allows us to protest. End of story, did the good guys win?
A spy among them?
We mentioned it in our previous theories, but it seems completely confirmed during this first episode: one of the members of the team is now a traitor. But which one? Here again, the scenario applies the rule of divide and conquer and if cohesion had been the strength of our quartet, their relationship is more fragile than ever with heavy secrets at stake.
Everyone now has reasons not to tell their comrades everything; whether for selfish or more devious purposes. Because if you’ve already seen this first episode before reading these lines, you know what it’s about, one of the characters doesn’t seem to be who he says he is. Severance Season 2 thus does not begin in a pattern where it would no longer be about them against Lumon, but about them against them. This is where this science fiction series, which takes the form of a satire of the corporate world, pushes its criticism even further, using more than real manipulation levers that many of us have experienced. The series comes back strong by pushing vice ever further.
Still many, many questions
Finally, by refocusing its first episode around our four characters in their professional lives, Severance season 2 avoids showing all its cards and leaves a lot of questions still unanswered. Here again, it’s one of the strengths of the show since its beginnings and it’s what keeps us here despite sometimes less captivating moments, because it gives us an irresistible desire to know what happens next. Especially after all the questions that we could ask ourselves at the end of season 1 and for which this first episode of season 2 is only half-treacherous, or even close by simply giving us a truth. A truth that just needs to be dissected in future episodes.
Three years ago, an episode of Severance per week aroused our curiosity. Today, this weekly broadcast may well be real torture for our nerves. Quickly, the rest!
