The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced The Stargate Project together with the leaders of the companies that are going to carry out a private initiative in which several technology giants will participate with OpenAI at the helm and that will invest in the next four years until $500 billion to create AI infrastructure.
Few may be surprised that artificial intelligence has been (along with the “salvation” of TikTok) one of the first announcements regarding technology by the new president of the United States and the technological oligarchy that intends to rule the country (and throughout the planet) during his mandate. «Write down that name, Stargate, because you are going to hear it a lot»Trump assured the press in the announcement of the “Largest AI infrastructure project by far in history”.
Trump assured that the gigantic investment will allow «create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the USA» and pointed out its relevance to confront the competition from china and the enormous investment that the Chinese giant is also making: «We want this technology to remain in our country. China is a competitor and, in the future of technology, we want it to stay in this country. China is a competitor and others are too. “We want it to be here”,
Trump not only made headlines and in the midst of an avalanche of executive orders, one must be expressly cited that is directly related to The Stargate Project. And Trump rescinded executive order 14110 of the Biden administration which regulated artificial intelligence and established safe, secure and reliable development and use of artificial intelligence. The elimination of this rule represents a significant reduction in supervision in an area of development that is as rapid as it is controversial and where there have been many warnings of uncontrolled AI.
A massive initiative for AI infrastructure
Going into more technological matters, say that the project is mainly made up of four companies (OpenAI, Oracle, SoftBank and MGX) united in a kind of joint venture which to begin with has already committed 100,000 million dollars and is willing to reach those 500,000 million dollars in the next four years.
“We will begin investing $100 billion immediately”the companies wrote in a joint statement. “This infrastructure will ensure American leadership in artificial intelligence, create hundreds of thousands of American jobs, and generate enormous economic benefits for the entire world.”.
The joint venture will be operated by OpenAIkey to an initiative that seeks unprecedented scale to create AI infrastructure. The most advanced company on the planet in AI technologies will have operational responsibility and the main objective is to create new and more advanced machine learning models. The financial management of the project will be carried out by the Japanese bank SoftBankand his boss, Masayoshi Son, will be the president of Stargate.
In addition to the investment firm, MGXanother giant, Oraclewill be key to the infrastructure and its president Larry Ellison (a renowned Republican and another of Trump’s great supporters) explained that the data centers were already currently under construction. «The first of them is under construction in Texas. Each building is half a million square feet. There are 10 buildings currently under construction, but will expand to 20, and in other locations beyond Abilene which is our first location..
As an example of the types of applications the project hopes to run on its shiny new infrastructure, Ellison cited electronic medical records management that would help doctors employ AI to treat patients.
Other relevant partners of The Stargate Project
In addition to the main partners, The Stargate Project will have the participation of other giants such as ARM (owned by SoftBank), Broadcom which is currently in talks like OpenAI to include its chips in its infrastructure or NVIDIAas the world’s largest producer of AI accelerators.
It will also be Microsoft as another of the key technology partners, although at the time of the announcement of this project, it has modified its 10-year agreement with OpenAI and Azure will no longer be the only exclusive provider for the laboratory. The reasons for the changes in society are not known, but everything indicates that the needs of OpenAI after the colossal investment of The Stargate Project will be of such magnitude that not even Microsoft’s infrastructure will be enough to house all the data.
“We all hope to continue building and developing AI, and in particular AGI (artificial general intelligence), for the benefit of all humanity”concluded the partners of The Stargate Project, an initiative with a unknown investment scale and that dwarfs those announced by other companies such as Amazon ($75 billion), Google ($50 billion) or Microsoft itself, which has planned an internal investment of $80 billion in the coming years, financed in part by the Price increase of its main services such as the Microsoft 365 suite.
