Almost two decades ago (!), Larry Page, co -founder of Google, already experimented with a camera mounted on a car to capture the world in pictures. Today, technology has evolved well. Now, a new street view camera will make the process more flexible and more efficient.
A camera ready to travel
Maria Biggs, technical manager at Google Street View, explains to CNBC : « These cameras can be shipped in a box and mounted on any car. No need to move an entire equipped vehicle, which greatly simplifies our operations. »
This innovation allows Google to cover new territories by avoiding logistical complexities. For example, teams can send a camera to Hawaii, rent a car on site, and start mapping. Result: regions such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Namibia or Liechtenstein will soon be visible on Street View for the first time.
Another advantage, the areas already covered, but left aside for years, can finally be updated. “” With this system, we gain mobility and responsiveness, which allows us to refresh our cards more often », ajoute Maria Biggs.
Street View is far from the only tool in Google Maps’ arsenal. To map the world, the company combines satellite images, aerial views and data from thousands of local partners. But these new cameras mark an important step, in particular because they facilitate the collection of information in places hitherto difficult to access.
With more than two billion monthly users, Google Maps is the number one navigation service in the world. However, competition is felt, and the company must redouble their efforts to keep its lead, which obviously involves artificial intelligence, but also through new recording technologies in the surrounding area.
These light and easy -to -transport cameras will become one of the essential tools to maintain the quality of Google Maps data. It is necessary in view of the competition (and for once, the equivalent of Street View in Apple Plans is rather efficient), but also for users who need to have ever more precise and recent cards.
And with the generative AI, Google can analyze the data collected to enrich the functionalities of MAPs: summary of opinions, real time reports and even personalized recommendations. Street view is no longer a simple curiosity, it is now an essential component of the Google Maps ecosystem. With these new cameras, the company supports the foot to the floor to expand the world’s vision of the users of its application.
