Los Open data They are a key resource, since thanks to them any person or institution can access, freely and free, to information generated by public and private organizations They decide to put them at their disposal. In this way, they can be analyzed and reused in various fields, ranging from scientific research to the development of new applications and services.
On the occasion of International Open Data Daythat next March 1and of the week of open data, from March 1 to 7, both organizations and administrations around the world have programmed events to value data with citizens, and to promote their use for public interest.
In this context, the UDIT (University of Design, Innovation and Technology), considers that the commitment of public administrations for open data can be crucial to improve transparency, promote innovation and research, and guarantee equality in access to information. But they are not the only reasons why open the information to the public and the different entities that may be interested in them in addition to this, there are five reasons why open the data is key to the public administration:
1 – Transparency and trust in institutions
Open data allow citizens to know how public resources are managed, and contribute to promoting transparency in the administration. In addition, free access to information reinforces confidence in institutions and encourages accountability.
2 – Impulse to innovation and technological development
Having open data available facilitates the development of new technology solutions. Especially in the AI field, which needs large volumes of information for models training. Also to sectors such as Medicine, where access to data remains a challenge, and that can benefit research centers, startups and companies to develop advances.
3 – Optimization of resources and administrative efficiency
Using open data allows public administrations to be coordinated with more effectiveness. Also optimize the allocation of resources and improve decision making. The management that is based on open data, in addition, promotes, a more efficient administration and oriented to the needs of citizens.
4 – Equality in access to citizen information and participation
Open data guarantees that citizens, regardless of their resources or where they are, have access to information transparently. In this way, access to information is democratized, in addition to promoting a more active citizen participation and with more information for decision -making and public debate.
5 – Improvement of the legal and ethical framework in data management
Having open data contributes to the generation of lighter regulatory frameworks, and in turn ensures that information management is carried out in a responsible manner. Thanks to open data, the protection of digital rights is reinforced, as well as the trust that citizens have in the use of their personal information.
Betting on open data in public administrations, therefore, improves the quality of public services and promotes the development of technology. About this, Sandra Garrido, Coordinator of the UDIT Technology Areaemphasizes that «the Adoption of open data by public administrations not only reinforces transparency, but also acts as a catalyst to build a more equitable, dynamic and innovative society. In addition, they play a crucial role in scientific research and university fields, where their availability facilitates the analysis of large volumes of information, encourages academic collaboration and accelerates the development of new solutions«.
