According to Down Detector, the problems started at around 3:10pm, and are affecting users across the UK and US.
Reports had initially come in of failures with WhatsApp but these later extended to the full set of Meta apps as well as TikTok.
Incoming and outgoing message traffic on WhatsApp were impacted first, with more than 21,000 issues being logged on Down Detector in the UK.
Of those who reported issues, 59 per cent said they were struggling to send messages, while 22 per cent were experiencing a server connection.
The remaining 19 per cent said the problem was with the app.
Then, some reports began emerging from users that other Meta apps Facebook and Messenger were also down too.
Reported issues with Facebook have skyrocketed in the past hour, peaking at more than 400 outages at 3.44pm today.
Instagram has also seen more than 100 reported problems with its app and website in the UK, with complaints peaking at around 3.45pm.
Meta has yet to comment on the reported issues.
Many users posted on X, formerly Twitter, after the app ground to a halt.
One person grumbled: “Lol was like “why aren’t my messages sending” on WhatsApp, thanks twitter for telling me that WhatsApp is down again.”
Another said: “Me running to X to see if WhatsApp is actually down or it’s my network.”
A third commented: “No need to switch flight mode on and off, Whatsapp is indeed down.”
A fourth said: “Welp Whatsapp and Instagram seem to be down now.”
Confirming the loss of Facebook and WhatsApp, one user said: “Both Facebook and WhatsApp are down.”
Annoyed, another commented: “Facebook is down once again grrrrr”.
Others have made light-hearted jokes about the outage, indicating the loss of service would encourage people to be off their phones.
Countless users pictures of swarms of people outside of their homes and in the streets, without mobile devices.
TikTok has also seen more than 100 reports of connection issues with both its website and app.
