If you noticed a sudden drop in the quality of YouTube videos recently, you’re not alone. After many users complained, YouTube has promised to roll out a fix.
“We’re aware some of you are experiencing lower than usual video quality when trying to watch Videos and Shorts,” YouTube wrote on a support page on Wednesday. “Rest assured, we’re actively looking into this.”
YouTube also added that some users, even with strong internet connections, may experience videos streaming at 144p or 360p. They might also encounter buffering when attempting to increase the video quality. Without stating the reason for the issue, YouTube said it is impacting iPhones, desktops, and smart TVs.
“We’ll update this thread with new information as soon as it becomes available,” YouTube added on the support page, where over 7,100 users have reported facing the problem.
Many users (myself included) assumed this was an ISP-related issue. “I thought it was only me!? This has been infuriating me, even after changing the setups to MAX res on WiFi and cellular it still reverts to 144p,” wrote a user on X.

“Even i was wondering the reason behind and i had to reset my router and change its password thinking that my Internet speed was slow,” wrote another.
Chromecast, another streaming product owned by Google, also ran into an issue recently. Casting was disabled on Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices for days before Google rolled out a fix.
