We are only a short week of the Nintendo Direct confirming the release date of the Nintendo Switch 2. It’s been more than 3 years that the players are looking forward to this moment, and by April 3, rumors and other leaks are going well. But sometimes it is from Nintendo directly that we obtain some information on the methods of leaving the console.
Today, we learn that not only the Nintendo Switch 2 will have exclusive titles to its ecosystem, but that some already existing games will also be entitled to their “Nintendo Switch 2 edition”. It is on the firm’s website for virtual game cartridges that information is noted. You have to read in the small lines to see the mention of these versions. Error or not, Nintendo explains:
“Compatible consoles must be connected to a Nintendo account to use virtual game cards. Exclusive games at the Nintendo Switch 2 and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be loaded on a Nintendo Switch 2 console.“
A simple portage or improved versions?
Unveiled during the last Nintendo Direct on March 27, virtual cartridges embody the new Nintendo dematerialized game system. Each game bought on the Nintendo Eshop will be usable in the same way as a physical game, which can be inserted in several consoles and which can be loaned to family members. For the Nintendo Switch 2, the functionality will be visibly limited to the titles optimized for the console, not the old versions of the games.
It is not yet known when, or even how certain titles will be able to obtain their “Nintendo Switch 2 edition”. As in the process of the PS4 to the PS5, the most popular opus of the current switch could have Next Gen updates, compatible with the performance of the Switch 2, in order to facilitate the transition from one ecosystem to another. This remains to be checked. The manufacturer may mention this aspect during its Nintendo Direct of April 3, which will concern the future console, but also the games that will come out on it.
