Laptops, smartphones and smart watches which were sold on Amazon have been recalled due to ‘a serious risk of fire and explosion’.

The government issued a warning about the products, which were shipped from China, saying they are a hazard.

Sold as ‘intrinsically safe’, the Dorland devices claimed to be suitable for use in areas where there are flammable gases or chemicals, where there is an increased risk from using electronic devices.

These Zone 1 and 2 explosive hazardous zones could include petrol stations, chemical plants, oil rigs or waste treatment plants.

But the Office for Product Safety and Standards said there was ‘no evidence that an appropriate conformity assessment was carried out before the products were placed on the market in Great Britain’.

The products are designed to be used in areas like construction sites where they need to be more robust

They said the products ‘do not have any of the required markings, including the specific markings of explosion protection and the symbol of the equipment-group and category’.

This means they do not comply with regulations in the Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2016.

Amazon has been instructed to recall all the products bought by British customers.
