OpenAI is upgrading ChatGPT’s capabilities by introducing a feature that allows the AI to remember and reference past conversations. This has been an awaited update as Google’s Gemini had this capability for a while. This update now allows ChatGPT to remember past conversations to give the users a more personalised response. This means that you could have a new digital friend who remembers everything about you and doesn’t miss anything.
What makes this update even more amazing is that it can remember the smallest details and suggest things that are just for you. For example, if previously ChatGPT knows that I’m an action movie fan, it’ll keep that in mind and recommend movies according to my taste.
While this new ability is great, it could be scary for those who are concerned about their privacy. So, OpenAI is making sure users are always in control. They have added the option to toggle this feature and turn off memory entirely in the settings. Even temporary chats won’t trigger memory usage, meaning they won’t affect or be influenced by previous interactions.
Starting today, memory in ChatGPT can now reference all of your past chats to provide more personalized responses, drawing on your preferences and interests to make it even more helpful for writing, getting advice, learning, and beyond. pic.twitter.com/s9BrWl94iY

The feature is right now restricted to just ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers globally, except for users in the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. Teams, Enterprise, and Education users will get access in the coming weeks, but there’s no timeline for when free users will get this update.
