Google is renowned for its post-capture photography nous and the newest tool for Google Photos users enables users to give their photos some added pep after the fact.

Google is bringing an Ultra HDR mode to Google Photos app users, and it can be applied to photos you’ve already taken within the library.

The option, which is only available for some Google Photos users according to Android Authority who noticed the feature, is appearing in version 7.24.0.747539053 of the Google Photos app for the best Android phones.

If you have access to the feature you’ll be able to see it within the Adjust menu within the Google Photos editor.

According to the report, the feature renders richer colours and brightness levels, provided you have a HDR display. If you don’t have a HDR-enabled display, you’ll just see the SDR version. Both versions will be stored between a single file, which is handy.

The feature appears to be based upon the Ultra HDR photography feature Google introduced within Android 14 with a new file format built upon JPG.

At the time, Google says: “The Ultra HDR Image format lets images store more information about the intensity of light, resulting in more detailed highlights and shadows, and more intense colours.

It’ll be interesting to see how the feature transforms some older, duller images that have been uploaded to Google Photos in the past.
