OpenSUSE announced the beta release today of openSUSE Leap 16.0, their next-generation Linux distribution from from SUSE Linux Enterprise 16 (SLE 16) and its new base of SUSE Linux Framework One that was previously known as the Adaptable Linux Platform (ALP).
OpenSUSE Leap 16 and SUSE Linux Enterprise 16 are a bit leap forward for this German Linux distribution. Today’s beta milestone is working toward a release candidate period in July and then the official Leap 16.0 stable release in October.
Besides being built atop SUSE Linux Enterprise 16, making openSUSE Leap 16.0 Beta all the more exciting is that it’s working to be Wayland-only while still clearing out some remaining X.org remnants, SysV init support has been dropped, the new Agama installer is used by default, and replacing the traditional YaST stack is Cockpit + Myrlyn. OpenSUSE Leap 16.0 also requires a minimum of x86-64-v2 micro-architecture baseline support.
OpenSUSE Leap 16.0 Beta makes use of the Linux 6.12 LTS kernel like SLE 16.0 itself, GNOME 48.0 and KDE Plasma 6.3.4 as desktop options, AppArmor 4.1, and other package upgrades like GIMP 3.0 and Cockpit 334.
