Meta introduced its own ChatGPT rival, the Meta AI app, at the end of April. Here’s how to use it.
The Meta AI app is a new personalised AI chatbot based on the company’s Llama 4 models. The chatbot could previously be accessed in WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger and now Meta has released a standalone app solely dedicated to the AI assistant.
Meta AI supports text and speech input, allowing you to chat with the assistant aloud. The assistant features a new full-duplex speech mode trained on conversational dialogue to deliver more natural responses, and can learn facts about you to offer more personalised and relevant answers to your prompts.
There’s also a social aspect to the Meta AI app, with a Discover feed where you can share your best prompts to inspire others or remix other users’ prompts to create your own.
Unfortunately, the Meta AI app isn’t available in every region at the time of us publishing this guide. For example, while we could sign in to the app, there was no support for the assistant yet. However, if you find yourself in the same scenario, you can access the assistant and Discover feed in a browser by heading to Meta.ai in the meantime.

- Tap Set Up A Device
- Sign into your Meta account or create a new one
- Enter your name
- Accept the terms if you’re signing in with Instagram
- Tap Create Account
How to use the Meta AI app

Step 1.
Open the Meta AI app
You can find the app in the iOS and Android app stores.

Step 2.
Tap Set Up A Device
This will take you to the sign in page.

Step 3.
Sign into your Meta account or create a new one
You can tap on your Instagram account if you see it, or create a new account with your email address and tap Next.

Step 4.
Enter your name
This is the name that will be used for account recovery and it will not be made public on the Discover feed. Tap Next once you’re ready.

Step 5.
Accept the terms if you’re signing in with Instagram
We used Instagram to sign up so needed to give Meta AI certain permissions. You can click Allow and Continue or choose to continue without using your Instagram account.

Step 6.
Tap Create Account
Finally, check your details and choose whether your want to receive emails from Meta regarding its smart glasses product line. Hit Create Account if everything looks good.
Troubleshooting
As of April 29, Meta AI voice conversations and the full-duplex mode are only available in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. However, we expect Meta to roll these features out in other regions in the future.
Meta AI can answer questions, offer advice, hold conversations, generate text and images and edit them.
Meta AI is also the companion app for Meta’s smart glasses, including Ray-Ban Meta Glasses. The app is required to manage the glasses, import and share photos and videos and more.
