Whether you need to remove a mower blade for maintenance, to fit a new one or to sharpen the existing one, it’s important to know how to remove your mower’s blade.

While instructions differ from machine to machine, the rough principle is the same. Here, we’ll show you the steps you need to take and the equipment that you’ll need. If you find that your current mower seems past it, then why not look for a replacement in our guide to the best lawn mowers.

What you’ll need

The short version

  • Turn the mower off fully
  • Line up your tools
  • Stop the blade from moving
  • Undo the bolt
  • Inspect the blade and washer
  • Replace the blade
  1. Step 1.

    Turn the mower off fully

Make sure the mower is powered off, unplugged, and any batteries are removed. For petrol mowers, you might remove a spark plug or crimp the fuel line. For cordless mowers, remove any safety keys.

  2. Step 2.

    Line up your tools

You’ll only need a few basic tools to get the job done safely. Sturdy gloves will keep your hands safe when holding the blade. A clamp and a spanner will get the job done.

  3. Step 3.

    Stop the blade from moving

You’ll need to lock the blade in place to remove the bolt that holds it down. Special blade locking tools are available, but you can do the same thing with a simple clamp or even a piece of timber. Upend your mower and attach the clamp to the underside of the cutting deck so the blade cannot turn. Alternatively, wedge the piece of timber between the blade and the cutting deck.

  4. Step 4.

    Undo the bolt

Once the blade is secure, take the spanner and undo the bolt. It might be held on rather tight, so don’t be afraid to use a bit of force. The nut and blade should come right off.

  5. Step 5.

    Inspect the blade and washer

Once the blade is removed, inspect the washer and bolt that held it in place. If damaged or corroded, replace with fresh ones.

  6. Step 6.

    Replace the blade

Take special care when replacing a new or sharpened blade. Hold it in place with your clamp or lump of wood and replace the washer and bolt. Tighten them down and make sure the blade is balanced before mowing the lawn again.
