The Canonical Kernel Team confirmed their plans today that with the Ubuntu 25.10 release in October they are planning to employ the Linux 6.17 kernel.
This move isn’t too surprising given the Canonical commitment last year to ship Ubuntu Linux with the very latest upstream kernel release as of release time. Under their old approach Ubuntu 25.10 would have likely been on Linux 6.16 but now with their modern policy it should be using the Linux 6.17 kernel that will still be very fresh in October.
Linux 6.15 stable should be out this weekend, Linux 6.16 stable likely at the end of July, and Linux 6.17 in turn should be out as stable in early to mid October.
The Linux 6.17 plan for Ubuntu 25.10 was announced today on Ubuntu Discourse. Good to see this commitment to using the very latest upstream continuing. Ubuntu 25.10 should also be shipping with the GCC 15 compiler, GNOME 49 desktop, and a wealth of other software upgrades.
