WeChat has banned 209 accounts accused of using AI to impersonate well-known individuals for improper marketing purposes, the company announced Thursday through its content moderation platform WeChat Coral Safety. The crackdown followed media reports and user complaints about the rise of AI-driven techniques used to mimic public figures inappropriately for promotional activities. In a targeted campaign to combat these actions, WeChat removed 532 pieces of content and permanently shut down the implicated accounts. Tencent emphasized that the platform would continue to enhance enforcement efforts against the misuse of AI for impersonation, including malicious content designed to attract undue attention.
