Apple and OpenAI have reserved the initial production capacity of TSMC’s A16 (1.6nm) process technology due to both companies’ long-term demand for self-developed AI chips, according to Taiwanese media outlet Economic Daily News. The A16 is TSMC’s most advanced process node revealed to date, with mass production scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026. TSMC has previously stated that the A16 will utilize next-generation Nanosheet transistor technology and adopt Super Power Rail (SPR) technology. SPR technology is an advanced backside power delivery solution that enhances power efficiency and performance in semiconductor devices by directly supplying power to the transistors from the backside of the chip.
