The government of India has introduced a new FASTag-based Annual Pass for private vehicle owners in India. This move aims to make highway travel smoother and more affordable for frequent commuters. Announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the pass will be available from August 15, 2025, and is valid for non-commercial private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans.
The government says this initiative aims to reduce toll-related issues, especially in areas where toll booths are located less than 60 km apart. Here’s what the pass helps to skip frequent stopping at toll plazas, helps to reduce disputes over toll charges, brings a simplified payment experience, cut down on travel time and traffic congestion.
It’s also a more affordable alternative to the earlier proposal of a Rs 30,000 one-time toll payment for 15 years, which has now been dropped.
What Does the Pass Offer?
This pass is designed for people who frequently use highways and want a fixed-cost toll solution. If you are planning to get the annual FASTag pass, then know its:
- Price: Rs 3,000
- Validity: 1 year from the date of activation or up to 200 highway trips, whichever comes first
- Eligible Vehicles: Only private, non-commercial vehicles
Coverage: Usable across all National Highways in India
How to Buy the FASTag Annual Pass Online
You won’t need to visit a toll plaza to activate this. The pass will soon be available through:
- The Rajmarg Yatra App
- The official NHAI website
- The MoRTH website
Once the link is active, you’ll be able to activate or renew the annual pass online without needing any extra documents if you’re already using FASTag.
Despite some confusion, the Ministry has confirmed that there’s no plan yet to replace FASTag with a satellite-based toll system. So, the new annual pass is your go-to option for now.
