Catalyst, a non-profit science and technology hub in Belfast, has announced the appointment of Sir David Sterling to its board.

Sterling spent decades in the Northern Irish Civil Service, becoming its highest-ranking officer in 2017 before stepping down in 2020.

He will support the work of Catalyst, which provides workspaces, mentorship and networking opportunities to tech founders in Northern Ireland.

“It is fantastic to have Sir David joining the board of Catalyst and adding his expertise and unique perspective on Northern Ireland to a group that is committed to helping entrepreneurial businesses flourish,” said Catalyst chairman Neil Crockett.

“David brings a tremendous amount of experience from his career in the Northern Ireland Civil Service, which will be very valuable as we work with the executive team to implement Catalyst’s strategic objective of enabling opportunity for all from world class innovation.”

Sterling has also chaired the board of Northern Ireland Electricity, the Northern Ireland Screen Commission and serves as a governor of the Irish Times.

“I am delighted to be joining the Board of Catalyst,” Sterling said.

“It is an organisation I have long admired for the contribution it makes to fostering innovation and entrepreneurialism in Northern Ireland.

“I look forward to working with the Catalyst team to help build on current success and grow the local economy for the benefit of all.”

Last year, Catalyst’s research revealed that Northern Irish tech companies were bucking global trends by securing record funding.
