Samsung has launched the Odyssey 3D, which is a glasses-free 3D gaming monitor to make the 3D gaming experience better. What makes it better is the elimination of discomfort and inconvenience which has been a usual case with 3D content, Samsung suggested.

How 3D displays are different from the traditional displays is that it creates a sense of dimension using binocular disparity. This helps our brain to understand the depth in the images via each eye. Similarly, the latest Odyssey 3D gaming monitor by Samsung offers glasses-free 3D experience which lets each eye perceive different images without the need of any external devices such as 3D glasses. Plus, even if you are wearing glasses, the eye tracking tech helps to deliver the same experience.

Odyssey 3D: How Does It Work?

The Samsung Odyssey 3D monitor works basically on three key technologies — eye tracking, view mapping, and a lenticular lens. Sounds interesting, right? But here’s how it actually works.

At the top of the monitor, there’s a stereo camera that tracks your eyes in real time. Think of it like a pair of digital eyes that watch your eyes move. Just like how our two eyes give us a sense of depth, these two cameras capture slightly different angles to figure out exactly where you’re looking and how far your eyes are from the screen.

With that info, the monitor calculates where to send the image for each of your eyes—this is called view mapping. Then, using the lenticular lens, which is a special kind of layered lens, it directs the right image to each eye by bending the light in just the right way.

That’s how you get that cool 3D effect.

Can It Work As A 2D Display Too?

The good part is that it’s still a gaming monitor even when you’re not using 3D. Even in the regular 2D mode, you get the gaming experience. However, the 3D feature only turns on when you enable it using the Odyssey 3D Hub, so everything stays smooth and sharp whether you’re in 2D or 3D.
