Best TV shows and movies to stream this weekend
Netflix
Charlize Theron is back as Andy, the leader of a group of immortal mercenaries, in The Old Guard 2, which arrived on Netflix July 2. (The first film, which came out in 2020, is also available to stream on the platform.) In the sequel, Theron is joined by almost the entire cast of the original film, as well as another actor with serious action chops, Uma Thurman, who plays Discord, a fellow immortal described as an “agent of chaos,” who battles Andy.
It took years for beloved graphic novel The Sandman to be adapted to the screen, and the second season, which will be the show’s last, is finally here. This season, which stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, an immortal being who is one of the Endless, and co-stars Gwendoline Christie, Boyd Holbrook, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste, will drop in two parts: the six episodes of Volume 1 arrived on July 3, and the final five episodes of Volume 2 arrive on July 24.
Hulu
If you’ve been waiting on Dan Da Dan Season 2, the show’s newest season premiered July 3, and it’s on Crunchyroll, Netflix and Hulu. New episodes of the anime series about high schoolers Momo and Okarun, who team up with friends to battle supernatural entities, will be released weekly on Thursdays, for a total of 12 episodes.
Amazon Prime Video
In the new Amazon Prime Video original movie Heads of State, Idris Elba and John Cena play the UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke and US President Will Derringer, respectively. Despite the fact that the two men don’t get along, they’re forced to team up when they become the targets of a foreign adversary. The action comedy also co-stars Paddy Considine, Stephen Root, Carla Gugino and Jack Quaid.
Max
In Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, Michael B. Jordan plays dual roles as twins Smoke and Stack, two World War I veterans who return to their Mississippi hometown after working for the Chicago mafia, only to find the new juke joint they’ve opened attacked by vampires. Lauded as one of Coogler’s best films and one of the best films of the year so far, Sinners arrives on Max on Friday.
Dear Ms.: A Revolution in Print (July 2)
When Ms. magazine launched in 1972, it was unlike any other publication. Focused on everything from politics to race, sex, and pop culture — all through a woman’s lens — the magazine was as controversial as it was groundbreaking. In the new Max documentary, issues that impact women are explored, from politics to harassment, race, sex and abortion. In the documentary Dear Ms.: A Revolution in Print, which came out on July 2, some of the magazine’s most iconic cover stories are examined by those who wrote them to reflect on their impact and lasting effects. Co-founders Gloria Steinem, Letty Cottin Pogrebin and Pat Carbine — and first editor Suzanne Braun Levine — all participate in this three-part documentary.
Paramount Plus
Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado is a new live-action family film featuring Dora the Explorer. Samantha Lorraine stars as Dora and Jacob Rodriguez plays her cousin Diego, while Gabriel Iglesias appears as the voice of Boots, Dora’s beloved monkey. The film is the sequel to 2019’s Dora and the Lost City of Gold and sees Dora, Diego and their crew head to the Amazon rain forest to discover the legendary treasure of Sol Dorado and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. This film — and the Season 3 premiere of DORA, the reboot of the long-running animated TV series — are both available on Paramount Plus now.
