A POPULAR Tex Mex chain has confirmed the closure of its final locations, bringing more than three decades of serving loyal customers to an end.
The last branch of the beloved Z’Tejas chain closed its doors in Kyle, Texas, on June 30.

The company cited “the challenges of today’s market” and the end of the venue’s lease as reasons behind the move.
“After nearly three decades of serving communities across Texas and Arizona, it’s time to say goodbye to this chapter,” a statement reads.
Z’Tejas had faced a big wave of branch closures over the past few years.
This included its 33-year-old flagship restaurant in Austin.
The chain had been reduced to just four restaurants by the start of 2025.
It had been on the lookout for a new buyer before ultimately deciding to close its last outlets, the MailOnline has reported.
The statement adds: “We are deeply grateful to our guests, neighbors, and friends for your support, your stories, and for making Z’Tejas a part of your lives.”
The chain first opened its doors in Austin back in 1989 and became well known for its Southwestern cuisine.
It would expand through the 1990s to feature locations across Texas, California and Arizona.
But Z’Tejas fell on harder times in the 2010s, during which time it went through bankruptcy procedures and changes in ownership.
Owner Randy Cohen told the Phoenix Business Journal: “I just don’t think we executed with consistency and with everything that you need to do to have a winning restaurant.
“And restaurants are in a pickle right now.”
It comes after another beloved restaurant chain closed down a popular location in a major US state.
Applebee’s has closed down a location in St. Petersberg, Florida, and the empty restaurant is all that is left.
The closure was revealed on social media, showcasing the chairs stacked up on the tables and the remains of the torn down sign on the front.
The caption of the Facebook post said: “Abandoned Applebee’s on 66th Street North in St Petersburg.”
Restaurant closures in 2025
Denny’s – Denny’s has confirmed that up to 150 locations are set to close in the US by the end of the year as many of them are no longer profitable.
Red Lobster – The chain has said that it plans to close over 100 stores across the country this year as new CEO Damola Adamolekun takes over.
TGI Friday’s – TGI Friday’s is still being forced to shutter locations thanks to a bankruptcy filing, including 30 in April alone.
Applebee’s – This chain is projecting a loss of 20 to 35 Applebee’s spots in 2025 but is teaming up with IHOP to introduce dual-branded locations with a curated menu of the two’s best items.
Noodles & Company – This emporium is set to close between 17 and 21 locations in 2025 following a difficult 2024.
