Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 is official, and it’s on sale later this month – but what’s really new compared to the Z Flip 6?

It’s a particularly big year for Samsung’s flip-style foldable. It introduces new elements like a larger 4.1-inch cover screen with impressively slim bezels and a taller and wider 6.9-inch foldable screen to allow it to better compete in the foldable market, while elements like software and battery life have also been boosted.

That said, the Z Flip 6 is now much cheaper than its RRP, so should you go for the latest foldable or save a bit of cash with last year’s model?

While we’ve gone hands-on with the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7, we’re yet to publish our full in-depth review. That said, here’s how it compares to the Galaxy Z Flip 6 based on specs and our initial impressions.

Pricing and availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is available to pre-order now ahead of release on 25 July 2025, and it’s available for £1049/$1099.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 launched back in July 2024 and, as a result, is now much more affordable than its initial £1049/$1099 price tag – a trend that’ll likely continue as retailers shift remaining stock of the year-old foldable in the wake of the Flip 7 reveal.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a much larger screen

One of, if not the most easily identifiable difference between the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and its predecessor is its larger cover screen. At 4.1 inches, it’s a massive step forward from the 3.4-inch equivalent on the Z Flip 6, providing a larger canvas to display widgets and apps and a better viewfinder for those selfies.

It also refreshes at the same 120Hz as the internal screen, up from 60Hz on the Flip 6’s cover screen, for a smoother experience when scrolling and swiping. It also sports the same 2600nit peak brightness as the internal panel – again, brighter than the 1600nits of its predecessor.

That’s paired with impressively slim 1.25mm-thick bezels that make the Z Flip 6’s thick bezels look well and truly dated. In fact, it even gives the competing Razr 60 Ultra a run for its money in this department – but that’s a story for another comparison.

With the extra space required for a larger cover screen, Samsung also took the opportunity to up the Z Flip 7’s internal screen from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches. It’s also slightly wider than its predecessor, with the same 21:9 aspect ratio used by many regular bar phones – as well as the Z Fold 7’s cover screen.

Elsewhere, however, the two internal panels are similar; both sport an LTPO-enabled 120Hz refresh rate, a 2600nit peak brightness and support for HDR10+.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is thinner – but the Flip 6 is lighter

Look past the Z Flip 7’s big cover screen and you’ll also notice that it’s a bit thinner than the Galaxy Z Flip 6 – though it’s admittedly easiest to tell if you’ve got both side-by-side.

Still, at 6.5mm unfolded and 13.7mm unfolded, it’s an improvement on the 6.9mm and 14.9mm of its predecessor.

Thinner doesn’t always mean lighter, however; despite being the slimmer of the two, the Z Flip 7 weighs more than the Z Flip 6. That said, at just 1g between them, it’s hard to imagine that anyone could tell the difference – even holding them side by side.

Exynos vs Snapdragon

When it comes to chipsets, Samsung has taken a significantly different path with the Galaxy Z Flip 7. While the Galaxy Z Flip 6 sported the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 as the Fold 6, and the Z Fold 7 features the upgraded Snapdragon 8 Elite, the Z Flip instead gets Samsung’s Exynos 2500 chipset.

It’ll no doubt be a disappointment to some that the latest Flip doesn’t sport the top-end Snapdragon chipset, especially as it’s a particularly big year for Qualcomm’s chipset with huge year-on-year gains.

However, both are built on the 3nm process, and we’re yet to benchmark the Exynos 2500, so it could still offer performance gains over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 – we’ll just have to wait and see for now.

Elsewhere, both phones are paired with 12GB of RAM and either 256- or 512GB of storage.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a larger battery

With a slightly wider chassis to work with, Samsung has boosted the battery capacity of the Z Flip 7 to 4300mAh – that’s the biggest in any Z Flip to date, and only 100mAh less than the much larger Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Samsung claims that this can provide up to 30 hours of video playback on a single charge, up from the 24 hours of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and its 4000mAh cell – but as always, we’ll have to benchmark the phone to verify those claims.

Cell size aside, the two are similarly evenly matched; both offer 25W charging and 15W wireless charging capabilities, with 4.5W wireless charging to boot.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 has new AI-powered features

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is skipping OneUI 7 and ships with OneUI 8 based on Android 16 out of the box. While there aren’t many major breakthroughs in Galaxy AI tech on offer here, there are improved features to enjoy.

First up is improved Circle to Search technology; it’ll not only let you get help when gaming on the phone without leaving the game, but with a new AI mode, you’ll also be able to talk back and forth about the response you get. It’s currently limited to the US and India, but it’s expected to roll out widely in the future.

Similarly, the Z Flip 7 offers an optimised version of Google Gemini explicitly designed to work on the 4.1-inch cover screen, making it easier to use – especially when enabling the video functionality to show Gemini the world around you.

The camera app also has a few new tricks. New portrait filters will render in the preview in the cover screen when taking selfies, so you know exactly what the result will look like, while a new auto zoom mode will automatically follow and centre you as you move around the scene.

What isn’t clear, however, is whether the Z Flip 6 will benefit from any of these features once it receives the OneUI 8 update. We’d hazard a guess that it’ll get the Google-focused features, as these will likely roll out more widely among Android phones in the near future – but elements like autozoom are to be confirmed.

Early thoughts

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a significant update to the Galaxy Z Flip 6, which has been relatively stagnant over the past few years.

Features like a larger cover screen and a wider internal screen could go a long way toward addressing old complaints and enabling the Z Flip 7 to better compete with some of the best foldables on the market.

That said, the Z Flip 6 does share many similarities – from the camera setup to battery life and charging – so if you’re not too fussed about the larger screens, you could save a bit of cash with the older model.

We’ll reserve our final thoughts for our in-depth comparison, however, so check back soon for our full verdict.
