Microsoft confirmed a problem in Intune at the beginning of the month that caused the loss of customizations made to reference security policies during the update process. Now, the company has recognized another error in Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) that will cause even more problems to IT administrators.
WSUS allows IT administrators to efficiently distribute updates for Windows and Office within their network. Administrators have granular control over the implementation of updates in specific equipment according to policy configuration. WSUS optimizes the use of bandwidth and receives security patches regularly, which is crucial considering that it is the central nucleus for the distribution of updates in many organizations.
Basically, WSUS is synchronized with Microsoft Update servers at least once a day by default, with the option to increase the synchronization frequency available for administrators. However, this week Customers have reported problems with the synchronization process. Event records show exhausted connections when administrators tried to synchronize WSUS with Microsoft Update.
In a recent Reddit thread some clients complained about the problem, although others reported that their synchronization attempts had also been successful. Now, in a statement to Bleeping Computer, Microsoft has recognized the problem, noting that it is working on a solution.
Redmond’s firm explains that the problem has been due to a «Problematic update review in the storage layer»which is in the process of resolving. The error It has prevented customers from implementing Windows updates through WSUS and Configuration Manager. Although manual updates are still possible, it is not even a solution, since many business environments are quite complex and have a large volume of devices.
In any case, last year Microsoft announced that it would not add new functions to WSUS, indicating that the product will be discontinued soon. The company recommended migrations to more modern tools such as Intuita, Azure Update Manager and Windows Autath.
