I love reading and taking handwritten notes, but I don’t like the hassle of carrying around tons of books and notebooks. I’ve been a huge Kindle fan for most of my life, so I was beyond excited when Amazon launched its first Kindle Scribe model in 2022. This 10.2-inch E Ink tablet looks like a giant Kindle, but comes with a stylus and software that allows you to write in your own digital notebook. It even allows you to handwrite notes in your Kindle books, though not directly on the page. There’s a newer model out now, but this original version is still pretty great, and if you’ve ever been curious about the Scribe, now is the time to try it out, because this Prime Day, it’s at its lowest price ever.

I really enjoyed using the original Scribe and especially found its notebook feature to be useful. Writing on the Scribe is great, as the display is slightly textured to give the pen the feeling of writing on paper. It’s really an excellent experience and one of the selling points of the Scribe.

As someone who has purchased an inordinate amount of Kindle ebooks, I love the fact that I can access them directly from this device. Amazon and other ebook sellers lock you into their ecosystem by putting digital rights management software (DRM) on their books, preventing you from reading them on non-Amazon devices or apps. That said, you can download and read any DRM-free epub or PDF on the Scribe or any other Kindle.

My biggest gripe with the 2022 Scribe is that taking handwritten notes in a book isn’t as easy as I’d like. You have to first highlight a word or sentence, then tap the option to write a handwritten note. Once you finish writing, the note will then disappear and you have to click on it again to see what you wrote. The 2024 version of the Scribe makes it easier to write in the margins, but you still can’t write anywhere you want directly on the page. Of course, you are able to write wherever you want on any PDF in both versions of the Scribe.

Despite this software quirk, the original Scribe is still an incredibly useful tool for those who love to read and take handwritten notes. It’s especially tempting at this all-time low deal. However, if you don’t mind paying a bit more, the current 2024 version of the Scribe is also at an all-time low of $259.99, $140 off the $399.99 list price. It features a whole bunch of software improvements, including updated notebook features, and the ability to take handwritten notes directly in the margins of your ebooks. (though not anywhere else). No matter which Scribe you get, you’re getting it at the best price it’s ever been.
