Why does plastic become sticky?

Plastic degradation is a complex phenomenon that can occur for various reasons. Among the most common factors, there is exposure to heat, sunlight, humidity and aggressive chemicals. The natural aging of plastic also contributes to this degradation.

  • Exposure to heat: Plastics are sensitive to heat. When exposed to high temperatures for an extended period, plastic molecules can start deteriorating. This can result in an alteration of the structure of the plastic, making it sticky to the touch.
  • Exposure to sunlight: The ultraviolet rays (UV) of the sun can degrade the surface of the plastics. This degradation is often manifested by a deterioration of the external layer of the plastic, which makes it sticky and likely to discolor.
  • Exposure to humidity: Humidity can promote the growth of mold and bacteria on the surface of plastics, which can cause a sticky texture. In addition, water can penetrate inside the plastic and cause chemical degradation.
  • Aggressive chemicals: Certain chemicals, such as strong solvents or abrasive cleaners, can react with plastics and cause their surface degradation, making them tights.
  • Natural aging: Even in the absence of external factors, plastics undergo a natural aging process over time. This can result in deterioration of their physical and chemical properties, which results in a sticky texture.

Solutions to repair sticky plastics

When plastics become sticky due to degradation, it is important to note that it is often difficult, if not impossible, to restore them completely to their original state. However, there are several methods that you can try to improve the appearance and texture of sticky plastic.

  • Cleaning : The first step is to try to clean the plastic surface with a clean and humid cloth. Use soft soapy water to remove the sticky layer. Avoid strong abrasive or chemical cleaners because they could damage plastic more.
  • Use of isopropyl alcohol: Isopropyl alcohol, also known as friction alcohol, can be used to remove the sticky layer. Apply alcohol on a clean cloth and gently rub the sticky surface. Make sure to rinse and dry the surface after use.
  • Use of baby powder or cornstarch: Sprinkle with baby powder or cornstarch on the sticky surface, then rub gently with a clean cloth. This method can help absorb moisture that contributes to sticky sensation.
  • Sanding: In extreme cases where the previous methods do not work, you can try to gently sand the surface of the plastic with a very fine sandpaper. This can eliminate the sticky layer, but be sure not to damage the plastic further.
  • Painting or varnish: If the plastic is already damaged and the above methods do not give satisfactory results, you can consider painting or varnishing the surface. This can improve the appearance and texture of the plastic.

How to prevent plastic degradation?

The best way to treat sticky plastic problems is to prevent degradation. Here are some tips for preventing plastic degradation:

  • Adequate storage: Avoid exposing plastic objects to high temperatures, direct sunlight or excessive humidity. Stick them in a cool and dry place.
  • UV protection use: For plastic objects that are exposed to sunlight, consider using UV protections, such as special treatments or coatings, to prolong their lifespan.
  • Regular maintenance: Regularly clean plastic objects to eliminate dirt, dust and residues that could contribute to degradation.
  • Avoid aggressive chemicals: Use soft and non -abrasive cleaners to avoid damaging the plastics surface.

Although it can be difficult to completely restore plastic in this state, methods of cleaning and improvement of appearance can often help to mitigate the problem. However, the best approach remains prevention by avoiding excessive exposure to heat, sunlight and humidity. By taking care of your plastic objects, you can extend their lifespan and prevent premature degradation.
