Some iPhone models could soon be banned from being sold or imported in the US. For those who are wondering why, know that it’s all tied to an ongoing legal dispute between Samsung Display and Chinese display maker BOE. The fight is over alleged misuse of Samsung’s OLED technology, a report by ETNews suggested.
Apple uses OLED panels from BOE in several iPhone models, especially the standard ones like the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, and the upcoming iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. Even the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to use BOE displays.
What did the US Trade Commission say?
The US International Trade Commission (ITC) recently issued a preliminary ruling in Samsung’s favor. It said BOE had infringed on Samsung’s trade secrets and recommended two key actions – a limited exclusion order and a cease and desist order, the report added.
These orders mean a limited exclusion order would block BOE OLED panels (and devices using them) from being imported into the US. The cease and desist order stops the sale or advertising of existing products using the disputed technology, even those already in the country.
How does this affect iPhones?
Since Apple sources some screens from BOE, especially for non-Pro iPhones, this could result in a temporary ban on those models in the US. However, Apple claims the ruling doesn’t affect any of its current products.
The final decision from the ITC is expected in November 2025. If the ruling is upheld, a two-month review period will follow, during which the US President (currently Donald Trump) can choose to veto the decision.
Until the final ruling in November, iPhones will continue to be sold normally. However, if the decision stands, Apple may need to shift suppliers or redesign components to avoid disruption in its US sales.
