FEX 2508 as the open-source emulator that allows running x86_64 Linux binaries on AArch64, including the likes of Wine and Valve’s Steam Play, is boasting some “big juicy” optimizations with its new release. Many games are now significantly faster atop FEX.
FEX 2508 is much faster than prior releases thanks to just-in-time (JIT) optimizations. Cyberpunk 2077 is around 38% faster for its average FPS while Doom is around 30% faster, Grim Fandango Remastered above 20% along with Stray, and performance wins in various other games. Here is what the FEX project is seeing with the v2508 release:
JIT optimizations are the big story of FEX 2508 and the ability to take advantage of Arm’s call-return prediction hardware. FEX with WINE WoW64/ARM64EC libraries can also Apple Silicon’s hardware TSO functionality.
For the FEX 2508 release, NX bit support was implemented along with better handling of anti-debugger/tamper functionality used by some Windows software like Denuvo.
