SAN FRANCISCO 49ers announcer Greg Papa has revealed he will step away from the broadcasting booth immediately after being diagnosed with cancer.
Papa, 62, has been the voice of the 49ers since 2019 and was behind the mic for both of the team’s recent Super Bowl appearances.

He’s also a weekday host at KNBR radio when not fulfilling his duties with the 49ers.
In a heartfelt statement released on Friday, Papa revealed he is focusing on his treatment and recovery.
He also shared who would be stepping in during his absence.
He said, “I’ve been diagnosed with cancer and am currently undergoing treatment.
“As I focus on my recovery, I’m stepping away from broadcasts but look forward to returning soon.
“In the meantime, my co-host Greg Silver will take over, and I’ll be tuning in!”
The 49ers’ official Twitter account posted a tribute video showcasing some of Papa’s most iconic calls, thanking him for his years of dedication.
Silver, who will temporarily take over hosting duties, also shared his support for Papa on social media.
He said: “Today is not a fun day and I know how much Greg hates not being able to work.
“We’re all here for him and we can’t wait to have him back stronger than ever. Stay Greg-cellent, MOFO!”
A seasoned broadcaster, Papa has been in the industry since 1984, starting with the Indiana Pacers.
Throughout his career, he has worked with teams in all four major North American sports leagues, including stints with the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants.
He’s been with a California-based team since 1986.
Tributes and well wishes for his fight ahead poured in for Papa on social media.
