If you are smart enough, then sometimes you don’t have to wait for the sale and you can grab your favorite product by some other means. This is what an Indian man did when he wanted to purchase a new MacBook. He not only thinks outside the box, but he also took a vacation outside the country. A clever Reddit user decided to take an unconventional approach, and hence, instead of buying a MacBook in India, he booked a trip to Vietnam.
Here’s What He Did to Save His Money and How He Purchased a MacBook for Less Amount
Yes you heard that right! Everyone knows that Apple products are known for their exclusivity and premium pricing. In India, the prices of Apple products climb even higher due to the import duties and GST. However, a clever Indian man figured out a way to beat the pricing system in India.
Rather than buying a MacBook in India, he chose to book a trip to Vietnam and ended up not only saving money but also enjoying an 11 day holiday. “MacBooks and iPhones are just too expensive in India,” he further says. “You’re basically paying for import duties and GST.”
What He Did and How He Saved His Money:
He booked a budget round trip to Vietnam, including a flight to Hanoi. As soon as he reached there, he began working remotely and exploring the city in his free time. In between , he hustles and hunts for the best deals on the MacBook he wanted to buy.
Vietnam, as it turns out, offers significantly lower prices on Apple devices compared to India. On top of that, the country’s VAT refund scheme for tourists allowed him to shave even more off the price.
The MacBook model that he wanted to buy was priced at Rs 1.85 lakhs in India, that too including card offers. However, in Vietnam, after choosing the right store with VAT documentation, the man managed to buy the MacBook at Rs 1.48 lakhs, which is a saving of Rs 36,500. This is almost the cost of his flight tickets.
The entire trip, including the MacBook, cost around Rs 2.08 lakh. But once he got the tax refund, the amount he spent lowered by over Rs1.97 lakhs. Subtracting the purchase price of the MacBook from that sum, his holiday with his flights, accommodation, food and activities, it all cost him only Rs 48,000.
“Basically, I got myself a vacation and a MacBook, for less than what it would’ve cost me to buy just the MacBook in India,” he said.
