Chinese automaker Geely Holding Group is merging three existing divisions that develop intelligent driving technologies—and together employ more than 3,000 engineers—into one, in a sweeping restructuring that also includes the hiring of a senior executive from Huawei, the 21st Century Business Herald reported. Sources said that under the revamp, announced internally last week, the intelligent driving divisions of Geely’s electric vehicle brand Zeekr and its Hong Kong-listed Geely Auto unit will be combined into a joint venture called Chongqing Qianli Smart Driving Technology Co. The new entity, established in June by Geely, a government fund from the southwestern municipality of Chongqing, and artificial intelligence firm Megvii, is now headed by Wang Jun, previously president of Huawei’s smart vehicle unit, according to public records. Megvii, which is backed by Alibaba, announced a deal in July 2024 with Geely and the local government of Chongqing’s Liangjiang New Area to jointly develop software-defined vehicles in the city. Geely has been reshuffling the operations of Geely Auto and Zeekr, with Geely Auto set to complete a privatization deal for Zeekr later this year.
