London-founded AI unicorn ElevenLabs, known for its voice generation products, has launched a music creation tool in collaboration with the music industry.

Eleven Music, described by the company as the “highest quality AI music model”, allows for the speedy creation of music in a variety of styles, structures, genres and languages.

AI music generation has been heavily involved in the ongoing debates around the legality of automated content creation.

Numerous campaigns, including those backed by the likes of Elton John, Kate Bush and Damon Albarn, have formed to protect the rights of artists amid accusations that their work is being stolen and repackaged by AI models.

The debate has even spawned legal action, including an accusation from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) against AI startup Jammable.

In light of this, ElevenLabs, valued at $3.3bn is taking a different approach, claiming to be working with labels, publishers and artists with its new creation.

According to the company, Eleven Music is cleared for “broad commercial use” based on licensing agreements with the music industry.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, ElevenLabs chief executive Mati Staniszewski said the company had struck an agreement with Merlin Network, which represents the digital rights of various artists, with further agreements expected.
