On the social media platform Reddit, a user started a thread to share the policy of an Airbnb they stayed at with their other half.

It showed a picture of the policy, which forced guests to take out their trash or be hit with a fine.

The sign read: “To avoid additional charges, please ensure your garbage is properly disposed of.

“We will be forced to charge you for not taking out the garbage.”

The caption of the thread confirmed this: “Our Airbnb, which included a $200 cleaning fee, will charge us if we don’t walk across town to empty our trash.”

In the comments, some strongly disagreed with this policy, calling it “condescending” and unreasonable.

One person wrote: “I’d report this to Airbnb.

“There’s nothing reasonable about it.”

While someone else took it even further: “I’ve always found the excessive post card instructions in Airbnb‘s to be extremely condescending.

“It also makes me feel that the people renting out there place are often not in a financial position to actively take the needed risk to be temporary landlords and shouldn’t be doing it.

“And now I’m not saying the larger rental companies don’t have their problems.

“But if I’m going to be handing money over to stay in a rental, I don’t want a lecture in every room on what I can and can not do.”

And the comments made their way back to plain angry eventually: “‘We will be forced to charge you’ by who? Yourself? Everything about this sign is a joke.”

One person even called on others to stop using Airbnb altogether.

Tenant’s rights

According to InCharge Debt Solutions, tenants have several rights in the United States:

As a tenant, you have certain rights, and while they vary from state to state, there is a list of standard requirements virtually every landlord in the U.S. must provide:

  • Heat (but not air conditioning)
  • Running hot and cold water
  • Locks and keys
  • Smoke detector
  • Clean and safe common areas

Landlords can keep security deposits for several reasons. These include:

  • Unpaid Rent
  • Damage to the Property
  • Cleaning Costs
  • Unpaid Utilities or Bills
  • Breach of Lease Terms
  • Abandoned Property
  • Repairs Due to Tenant Negligence

If landlords don’t make any necessary repairs, tenants should:

  • Review Your Lease or Rental Agreement
  • Document the Problem
  • Notify Your Landlord in Writing
  • Contact Local Housing Authorities
  • Repair and Deduct
  • Mediation or Legal Action
  • Protect Your Rent

They slammed: “Airbnb has destroyed neighborhoods allowing owners to hoard homes and turn those into hotels.

“This has contributed to the extreme home prices we see today.

“If you want to run a hotel, then you need to buy a real hotel building!”

POLICY DEFENDERS

But some saw the sense in this policy, saying that it made sense for the host to spell it out on the sign.

A defender of the policy chimed in: “Oh I get it.

“The people the signs are meant to inform are the exact people who will not read the signs. It’s a tough spot for the host.”

Another Reddit user on this side said: “I imagine it’s somewhere with communal dumpsters.

“This is pretty common in parts of Europe where small streets don’t really lend themselves to everyone having their own bins.”

While a thrid got retro with it: “Tbh that sounds like a completely reasonable puzzle from a 90s point and click adventure game.”
