AI, carbon removal and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) are among the areas targeted by International Airlines Group (IAG) in the firm’s largest-ever accelerator cohort featuring 29 startups.

IAG, the London-headquartered conglomerate which owns British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia among other airlines, has been running its startup accelerator since 2016 and claims to have supported over 120 companies.

The latest cohort, which includes startups from 11 countries, is split between two development tracks.

The Deploy Track will see 14 startups collaborate directly with IAG and a handful of its operating companies on a 12-week proof-of-concept to test their solutions in operational conditions.

The Discover Track, focused on sustainable technology, will see 15 early-stage startups participate in training sessions for commercialising their technologies over a six-month period.

“We’re welcoming the largest-ever cohort of start-ups to the IAGi Accelerator, drawing on exceptional talent from across the world,” said IAG’s director of innovation Ignacio Tovar.

“We offer a unique opportunity for founders to work directly with our airlines to demonstrate the potential of their solutions. At its core, the accelerator exists to help scale the most impactful technologies for our industry, both today and into the future.”

There are eight British startups participating in this year’s cohort, including Mission Zero Technologies (carbon capture), Neela Biotech (sustainable fuel) and Signapse (AI sign language translation at scale).
