Chinese autonomous driving startup Momenta is testing its first in-house chip purpose-built for advanced driver-assistance systems, which is set to compete with more mature offerings from established rivals such as NVIDIA’s DRIVE Orin-X processors, local media publication 36Kr reported on Tuesday. Momenta, which mainly develops assisted and autonomous driving software, began making its own custom silicon and hired core members from the chip unit of Chinese smartphone maker Oppo back in 2023, according to the report. Meanwhile, the company is accelerating the expansion of its overseas footprint, with its autonomous test vehicles for passenger transport set to be available soon in Munich in a collaboration with Uber to launch robotaxi services, according to sources with knowledge of the matter. Momenta, backed by big auto names such as General Motors and Mercedes-Benz, is also reportedly providing advanced driving assistance functions to some overseas models of Chinese automaker SAIC, one of its major investors, which will go on sale in the UK, Germany, and Australia.
