BYD on Aug. 22 announced plans to build its fourth electric vehicle plant in Southeast Asia, expected to begin production in Perak, Malaysia, in 2026. The Chinese EV giant plans to assemble vehicles from “completely knocked down” (CKD) kits — major components shipped for local assembly — at a new facility covering 600,000 square meters (148 acres) in a tech park in Tanjung Malim, The Star newspaper reported on Aug. 23. The news comes a year after the automaker opened its first regional plant in Rayong, Thailand, last July, with an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. It is also building two more plants in Cambodia and Indonesia, scheduled to begin operations later this year and in January, respectively. Meanwhile, BYD has postponed plans to build an assembly plant in Vietnam, Reuters reported in March. [TechNode reporting, The Star]
