Google has announced a new AI-powered experimental feature in Google Translate. With the new AI feature, people can communicate in real time with someone who speaks a different language. The feature is now rolling out within the Google Translate app for iOS and Android users. It will also allow you to practice and learn a new language using live translation.
Live Capabilities in Google Translate App
Google Translate is bringing audio and on-screen translations for users, allowing them to have a seamless conversation with a person speaking in a different language.
Every month, people use Google to translate around 1 trillion words. Today, we’re introducing a new AI-powered live translation experience in the Google Translate app, plus a new beta feature to help you practice new languages. Rolling out now on iOS + Android. pic.twitter.com/0DvKYqbSTV

To use the feature, you can tap on Live Translation in the app and select the language you want to translate by simply speaking. The app will then provide a live transcript, along with audio playback, of your conversation in both languages in real time. The app will switch between the two languages depending on which language you and the other person are speaking.
Google says that this feature can also identify punctuations, pauses, and tones of the conversation for a natural-sounding experience. It uses Google’s voice and speech recognition models to isolate sounds, allowing you to use the live translation capabilities even in noisy environments. This feature is now available to users in the U.S., Mexico, and India.
Google Takes on Duolingo with Language Practice Feature
Google is also introducing a new language practice feature that caters to both beginners and advanced speakers. This will help people to learn a new language or brush up on their vocabulary. The app creates tailored listening and speaking practice sessions for users based on their skill levels and learning goals.
We’re also rolling out a new beta experience designed to help you meet your unique language goals.
In the Translate app, tap “practice,” set your language and skill level, type in your goals, then Translate will create listening and speaking practices tailored to you.

With the new language practice feature, Google is taking on popular language learning app Duolingo – which lets users learn over 40 languages using gamified approach.
To use this new feature, you can choose the ‘Practice’ option within the Google Translate app. Before beginning, you can set the skill level and goals as per your preference. Google Translate will now prepare a customised session for you, where you can either listen to conversations and tap on the words you hear to enhance your skills or try to practice by speaking. Google says that this practice tracks users’ daily learning progress.
This feature is currently in beta phase and now rolling out to iOS and Android users. For now, the practice feature is available for English speakers who want to learn Spanish and French, as well as for Spanish, French, and Portuguese speaking users learning English.
