Bristolian biotech startup EnsiliTech has secured a £4.5m seed investment to scale its work developing transport systems for vital medicines.

Founded in 2022, EnsiliTech has patented technology to improve the storage and transportation of vaccines, antibodies and enzymes.

The group was launched to reduce the biopharmaceutical industry’s reliance on legacy ‘cold-chain’ systems, which are costly and energy intensive methods to refrigerate and freeze the materials for transit and storage.

According to the startup, its technology can preserve the integrity of vaccines while storing them at up to 50C, which is particularly helpful when transporting biopharmaceuticals to regions without access to reliable refrigeration.

“Our mission is to ensure that life-saving medicines and vaccines reach everyone, everywhere, regardless of infrastructure or geography,” said EnsiliTech co-founder and chief executive Dr Asel Sartbaeva.

By eliminating the need for refrigeration, our technology significantly reduces supply-chain costs and drug waste, while also lowering the environmental impact of pharmaceutical distribution.

This investment is a major step forward for the team, and we’re thrilled to have the backing of partners who share our vision for a more equitable and sustainable future in global healthcare.”

The investment was led by Eos Advisory with additional backing from Calculus Capital, Empirical Ventures, Fink Family Office, QantX, Angel Investors Bristol, HERmesea, Penn Park Capital, chANGELS and individual angel investors.

“EnsiliTech has the technology to transform how vaccines and other therapeutics are transported and stored,” said Anne Muir, director of portfolio at Eos.

“Reducing wastage, reducing cost and vastly improving health outcomes across the globe, this kind of science and this scale of potential sits at the core of our investment thesis at Eos.”

The startup raised £1.2m in a previous funding round in 2023.
