RING doorbell owners are being urged to make changes to their account in a bid to keep them safe from cyber criminals.

The Amazon-owned firm has emailed customers with “account management actions you can take now”.

Ring’s outreach doesn’t come off the back of any incidents at the company to be concerned about.

However, it’s designed to keep accounts as secure as possible in a digital world where hacking has become rife.

“To help stay one step ahead of phishing emails, Ring impersonators, and other online scams, we recommend setting up a passkey, double checking sources, and being cautious of deals that sound too good to be true,” the warning email reads.

“Please be aware that Ring personnel will not ask for your password or full credit card number.”

So what is Ring urging people to do to stay safe?

Firstly, it reminds users that they need to keep their account up to date.

You can review and ensure your details are current in the Control Centre on Ring’s website.

Secondly, Ring recommends that households update their password regularly to protect your devices and personal information.

They suggest using a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.

And the third bit of advice is setting up a passkey.

Passkeys are more secure that the traditional password because they can never be stolen or leaked.

That’s because you use your face or fingerprint, or the PIN you use to unlock your device instead.

You need to make sure you have the latest version of the Ring app on your phone to use passkeys.

To set it up on your account, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Ring app
  2. Find Account Settings
  3. Open Passkeys
  4. Tap Add Passkey
  5. Follow the steps
