HBO Max has a serious selection of shows and movies from all of its partner networks, including HBO, Discovery, Food Network, and more. New shows and movies are always being added, so here are my top picks for this weekend and the week ahead, plus everything new streaming below. September brings a wacky comedy from Tim Robinson, an exclusive crime drama series, and more. The full list is below.

This Week on Max: PCMag’s Picks

Friendship (Sept. 5)

Tim Robinson is an absolute treasure, and given the opportunity to anchor a feature film in Friendship, he nails it. The I Think You Should Leave star plays an awkward marketing executive who develops a man crush on his new neighbor, and the pair become besties before things go tremendously wrong. If you dig this style of comedy, Friendship is a real treat.

Task (Sept. 7)

Mark Ruffalo stars in the new seven-episode HBO miniseries Task, from the creator of the hit Mare of Easttown. He plays the leader of an FBI task force in Philadelphia trying to locate and apprehend the perpetrator of a string of violent robberies, unaware that the man he’s looking for is hiding in plain sight. The show looks tense, atmospheric, and engaging. New episodes drop every week.

  • Directors: Jeremiah Zagar, Salli Richardson-Whitfield

  • Cast: Mark Ruffalo, Emilia Jones, Tom Pelphrey

  • Genre: Drama

  • Rating: TV-MA

The Tech Bro Murders (Sept. 10)

Here’s a documentary miniseries that hits a little close to home. Investigation Discovery’s The Tech Bro Murders tells the tale of Silicon Valley stars who came to untimely ends. Each episode, hosted by police lieutenant Sandra Brown, dives deep into a new mystery, for a total of six tales. Sure, it’s not going to win any awards, but it’s good to know what dangers lurk inside tech success. New episodes are released every week.

  • Host: Sandra Brown

  • Genre: Documentary

  • Rating: TV-MA
