Streaming platform Plex has suffered a data breach and has requested users to reset passwords immediately.

In a notice confirming the breach, Plex says an unauthorized third party had gained access to a limited set of its customer data, which includes their emails, usernames, hashed passwords, and authentication data.

Since the passwords were hashed, “they cannot be read by a third party,” Plex says. However, to ensure additional safety, it has requested users to change account passwords as soon as possible.

You can do that by visiting https://plex.tv/reset. If you need assistance, you can check out Plex’s guide for resetting passwords. The streamer also recommends selecting “Sign out connected devices after password change” to log out of all devices and Plex Media Servers that were signed in by using the old password.

If you have been using an SSO, you need to visit https://plex.tv/security and select “Sign out of all devices.” Additionally, although Plex doesn’t mention it, if you have used your old Plex password elsewhere, this might be a good time to change that as well.

Plex also encourages setting up two-factor authentication for your account. This ensures that even if someone knows your password, they will require your secondary authentication to sign in.

Plex had suffered a similar breach in 2022 and had issued the same set of instructions back then as well. At the time, their servers got busy and couldn’t process all password changes immediately.

As for the latest attack, Plex says it has “addressed the method that this third party used to gain access to the system,” and is “undergoing additional reviews to ensure that the security of all of our systems is further strengthened to prevent future attacks.”
