Cybertruck, this large electric pick-up dressed in stainless steel and clad in technology, could have inaugurated an expected function: wireless recharge. As early as 2023, clues pointed out in this direction: the vehicle manual mentioned connectors intended to accommodate a ” inductive chargerIn other words, a wireless charger connected directly to the battery pack. What suggest that Tesla was preparing a dedicated station. Even Franz Von Holzhausen, brand designer, had let out that the idea was tested.

A quickly showered dream

But Wes Morrill, chief engineer of the Cybertruck, cut short the speculation during an discord exchange. “” Nothing planned “He said. He even adds that ” Wirelessly recharge a machine as high as the cybertruck is absurd: it would take a base of at least 15 centimeters high ». Result: the option will not go further than the laboratory.

The problem is simple: efficiency. The more the distance between the transmitter (in the ground) and the receiver (in the car) is greater, the more the energy is lost. With its huge ground clearance, the Cybertruck made the cordless recharging almost unusable. Tesla has planned to lower the trunk to bring the two antennas together, but the first prototypes were deemed impracticable: ” No one could reach the bottom of the trunk, it was too deep “Says Morrill.

The other reason is economical. The pick-up does not meet the expected success: Tesla would find it difficult to sell 20,000 units per year, far from the initial objectives. Investing in expensive technology for a niche vehicle therefore had little meaning.

The Porsche wireless charging system.

Other manufacturers do not hesitate to move forward. Porsche has announced that its future electric cayenne, expected next year, will offer an optional induction recharge. The power will reach 11 kW, the equivalent of a classic level 2 terminal at home. As the German SUV does not have the height constraints of the Cybertruck, the solution seems much more suitable.

Tesla had all the cards to make cybertruck a rolling laboratory, but the wireless recharge will not be its place. Too many losses, too few customers, and too many physical constraints. However, the idea is dead: it could reappear on other models or other brands. But for the Cybertruck, it will still be necessary to connect the old -fashioned cable.
