On Netflixit’s not just billionaires who sleep with other billionaires under the pen of the creators of The Money Heist. There is also the new series of Matt Rollerwhose names are found in the credits of series as Community, Rick & Morty or Archer. One of the current and irreverent humor popes for humor. We didn’t need more to throw ourselves with lost body on Haunted Hotel.

Haunted Hotel East An animation series of ten episodes – and more, if season 2 – on A dysfunctional family managing a hotel filled with ghosts and other Halloween creatures. On paper, the subject is not new and suggests series like Ghosts (in all its national versions), Transylvania hotel, Hazbin Hotel… In short, a whole bunch of series where hotels is the only possible retraining for demonic, ghostly or macronist creatures. But we have already told you that it was Matt Roller with the baguette?

The story of Haned Hotel

Sheila Freeling is a rather earth-to-terre mother who finds herself with a huge problem on her arms. The management of a hotel entirely populated by ghosts and other nightmarish monsters. And she has a hard time keeping all these little people in the ranks, especially since the establishment is struggling to bring back a single penny.

To help her, she can only count on her brother, an eternal optimist who is not very gifted and incidentally dead, her enthusiastic, but not very smart eldest son, her daughter adept at black magic always in the bad blows, and the adoptive offspring, a demon locked in the body of a little boy of the 18th century.

Family series that would not hurt a fly

The ten episodes ofHaunted Hotel Go like a letter to the post office. We feel that Roller has the experience of his subject and proposes An intrigue by episodewhile maintaining this disunited family’s red thread Who will gradually confide, rest on each other. This gives moments of humor, moments of emotion, one sometimes taking precedence over the other according to the current story.

We find a writing of characters that worked so many times, like that of the child both Machiavellian and Immature (Cartman in South ParkStewie at The griffinin a way Roger in American Dadetc.), the duo of adults who cannot be understood, but still loves himself, the eternal victim, etc. This is not a defect since it creates a dynamic that has proven itself again and again. Especially since we can count on un extremely solid vocal casting and very comfortable in these roles, quite usual in their respective filmographies, as Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) et Eliza Cup (Happy Endings).

For his own baby, we feel that Roller does not want to reproduce the recipe forever and, quite strangely given the material he had available, avoids overloading his story of metas references. Haunted Hotel is not Rick & Morty And if there are a few winks in horrific cinema or ghost stories, they do not fill the narrative or visual space. The author signs un show accessiblethat everyone can understand. This implies that jokes or the fantastic dimension are set so that young and old can share the experience, with a few more targeted exceptions. It is not Rick & Mortyit is not either Archer.

And that may be what causes wrong to Haunted Hotel. She is not. Not funny enoughbecause no joke leaves an unforgettable memory and there are several good gags under exploited. Not emotional enoughbecause its more intimate moments are balanced in the vast majority in the middle of something else, as if it were not necessary to attach it of importance. We quote for example the Origin Story of Abaddon, stated as a list of races without feeling. Not terrifying enough So as not to deprive yourself of a younger audience, despite a fairly original gallery of monsters. Not mature enough So that we hold a new animation series for adult reference.

Despite all the inspirations mentioned at the start of the article, we would bring together Haunted House of The Great Northa series of Disney+ animation on which we fell a little by chance. This is what the show represents, a program on which we can fall a little by chance, not unpleasant, but unable to play in the same courtyard as the giants of the genre. Everything is too smooth, without any wickedness, without a spirit of revolt. A Netflix series that makes you smile and forgets.

Difficult to say it differently, Haunted House is nice. Like a date going well, without it causing this little spark which will bring a suite. A sequel to which the series unfortunately seems to believewhile on our side, we again parade the programs of the Netflix app, in search of a more exciting new meeting. It’s not you, it’s me.
