It has been a very, very, very long time since the last Muo speaker. Nine years after the original, KEF has announced a new version of its portable speaker.
The Muo was always meant to be a high quality speaker in portable form, so this latest version looks to push the performance even further than the original did back in 2016. What can you expect from the new KEF Muo, and will it be able to rank alongside the best Bluetooth and outdoor speakers?
Powerful bass, richer sound
The original Muo aimed to offer class-leading sound for a portable speaker, and that is what the latest Muo aimes to continue.
Inside a large racstrack driver that’s been strategically place to allow for more efficient movement of the speaker cone “to generate airflow for a clear sound while minimising distortion”.
Featuring the P-Flex Surround Technology that’s been adapted from KEF’s KC62 and KC92 subwoofers, the Muo hope to produce deep, controlled bass “even at high volumes”. Hopefully that rings true considering most outdoor speakers produce less bass at higher volumes.

There a dedicated tweeter for the highs that KEF claims to offer sharp high tones, along with a “full-bodied mid-range” for a clearer, detailed sound.
KEF’s Music Integrity Engine makes use of DSP (digital signal processing) algorithms that have been specially tuned by the Muo to ensure the sound remains accurate whatever you’re listening to. Bluetooth support is version 5.4, with aptX Adaptive support for a high quality listen and wireless connection that shouldn’t budge even when there’s plenty of interference around.
Hi-Power
Battery life has been doubled from 12 hours to 24, although KEF cautions that this level of stamina is only at “moderate volume levels”.
If you are low on battery, a 15-minute charge boost the speaker by up to three hours; while if you keep charging the speaker, it’ll be fully charge in two.
It wouldn’t be much help if the speaker could last a while but it wasn’t durable enough. So, KEF have equipped the Mup with an IP67-rated water- and dustproof design. Whether it’s -20 degrees to 45 degrees, the new KEF Muo will be able to keep going. When the global climate apocalypse finally arrives, you’ll still be able to listen to your tunes through the Muo.

Call me on the speaker-phone
You can use the Muo to take calls with its built-in microphone along with noise and echo cancellation intended to make sure you’re heard with crystal clarity.
There’s Google Fast Pair and Microsoft Swift Pair support that makes it easy to connect to Android and Windows devices respectively; while you can connect the Muo through a connection thanks to its USB-C port.
Bagged yourself two Muo speakers? You can engage in some left and right stereo action, while with its Auracast support, you can broadcast audio to multiple Muo speakers (should you have deep enough pockets to purchase).
How much does a Muo cost?
The new KEF Muo has a price of $249.99. We don’t have UK pricing yet, but we assume it’ll be £249.99. We’ll update once we’ve received confirmation.
If you’re a myKEF member you’ll be able to purchase the Muo ahead of its general launch on September 30th.
