Energizer is launching laptops with massive batteries, but we have questions

Energizer is a brand best known for its batteries, but the company is looking to lend its name to a new laptop line that’s promising to give a full week of battery life on a single charge – something that’s pretty much unheard of.

Except, when you actually drill down into the data, it’s not really seven days worth of battery.

The 192Wh lithium-polymer monobloc offers seven days of standby time, which apparently translates to up to 28 hours of intensive office use or 11 hours of gaming or graphics design.

Sure, that’s still better than most laptops, which you’d expect with a bigger battery, but it’s still also not seven days worth of usage.

This battery will be found in the EnergyBook Pro Ultra, which is Avenir Telecom’s flagship laptop, which also sports a 1920 x 1200 resolution display, an AMD Ryzen 5 processor, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 512 GB SSD.

We’re still waiting for concrete details, but the specs are hardly impressive when you stack them up against the best laptops. Plus, as The Verge has discovered, the battery size goes against the FAA‘s flying regulations. We’ve checked and they go against the UK Civil Aviation Authority‘s too, so you won’t be able to take it on work trips.

The announcement also confirmed that Avenir is producing two other laptops: the EnergyBook Pro 15 and EnergyBook Pro XL 18. Details on these models are light, but we don’t expect these to sport the 192Wh battery – perhaps these are the ones designated for travel?

As for pricing, who knows. The only price we’ve been given is €449. We’re pretty sure that’s the starting price for the EnergyBook Pro 15, but there’s no confirmation on that yet.

Opinion

I’m all for innovation in the computing space, but this announcement seems a bit rushed. Without concrete pricing or specs, Avenir Telecom has raised more question than answers – and that’s a problem.
