Snapchat has introduced a new subscription model for its Memories feature, while also limiting free storage to 5GB.

In a blog post announcing the change, Snapchat said it never expected Memories “to grow to what it has become today.” The feature lets you save Snaps and Stories instead of letting them vanish after they are viewed. It also lets you organize saved photos by date, keyword, and albums.

Since the feature’s launch in 2016, over 1 trillion photos (yes, trillion with a T) have been saved by users. The new storage tiers are intended “to make sure that our community can continue to store all of their Memories over the long term,” Snapchat said.

For users with fewer photos, up to 5GB in size, Memories continue to be free. In case they exceed the 5GB limit, Snapchat will hold their photos for 12 months. During this time, they can switch to a paid tier or download the photos to their device’s memory.

Users who need more than 5GB of storage can choose from one of the paid tiers. Up to 100GB of storage is available for $1.99 per month. For up to 250GB, users can subscribe to Snapchat+ for $3.99 per month. And to get up to 2TB storage, they need to buy the Platinum subscription for $15.99 per month.

Having to pay for a feature that has been free since its inception may not sit well with all users, and Snapchat is aware of it.

“It’s never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it, but we hope the value we provide with Memories is worth the cost,” it said, adding that “these changes will allow us to continue to invest in making Memories better for our entire community.”
