This last week, Disney+ and Hulu got a combined login, and you can now access Hulu either in its own app or as a Disney+ channel. The Hulu interface will ride into the sunset sometime next year. Until then, Disney brings you the ultra-popular Marvel and Star Wars franchises, while Hulu covers a more adult-oriented niche with loads of movies and shows from network partners.
The two services release a ton of content every week, so I’ll make it easy for you by picking three worthwhile new entries. We’ve got a classic PG horror movie, a new entry in a long-running anime franchise, and a charming Dutch dramedy. The full list of TV shows and movies coming to the streaming services is below.
This Week on Hulu and Disney+: PCMag’s Picks
The Balloonist (Oct. 3)
The first Dutch original film on Disney+, The Balloonist shows what happens when young chicken farmer Gaby’s predictable life is upended by a hot air balloon crashing into her coop. Her well-controlled life starts to crack open, revealing long-simmering issues that her new aerial neighbor is bringing to the surface. It looks pretty charming. (There’s an English dub, too.)
Something Wicked This Way Comes (Oct. 3)
One of the biggest draws of Disney+ when it launched was its massive vault of content from the company’s movie and TV production arms, and it still maintains an impressive library of classics and cult favorites. New to the service this month is the excellent 1983 adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes, a masterpiece of all-ages horror that still holds up today.
Digimon Beatbreak (Oct. 5)
Sure, Pokémon is cool and all, but real portable monster battle fiends know that Digimon is often the more interesting franchise. Digimon Beatbreak is the latest entry into the series, produced by Japanese studio Toei. Set in a world where a power called e-Pulse fuels technology, things start to break down when bizarre creatures appear to feed on it. But are they really enemies of humanity, or something more?
