Just when you thought social media couldn’t get any weirder, the company that brought you ChatGPT has launched a new social media platform. It’s named Sora, after its video-generating AI, and while it’s now on the App Store, you can’t just download it and start scrolling.
Here’s the catch: Sora is a social network for real people that’s filled entirely with AI-generated videos. Yes, you read that right. A disclaimer for the app flatly states that nothing on the platform is authentic, yet OpenAI wants you to use it to connect with your friends.
To get in on this bizarre new experiment, you need an invite code from someone who’s already inside. Codes started trickling out earlier this week, so if you’re trying to get past the velvet rope, here’s what you need to do.

OpenAI’s Sora is available as an iOS app and through the Sora.com website.
How to get an invite code for OpenAI’s Sora app
To get an invite code, take these initial steps:
- Download the Sora app from the Apple App Store. Make sure you pick the one with the navy and white cloud icon.
- Log in with your ChatGPT account or tap Use different account.
- Tap Notify me when access opens.
- In the pop-up window, allow Sora to send you push notifications.
OpenAI said in a post that it’s starting the initial rollout in the US and Canada and intends to expand quickly to additional countries. The company is prioritizing its paying Pro users for Sora access.
Once you get an invite code, you can finish setting up your Sora account. You can then use Sora through the mobile app or website, and you’ll get access to four new invite codes to share with your friends.
(Disclosure: Ziff Davis, ‘s parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.)
